OUR RICH HISTORY

Opening Shady Spring Boarding Kennel in 1954, Russell and Mary Saul initially focused on breeding Chow Chows and boarding dogs for clients in the Washington, DC area.
Ownership changed paws a few times until 2001, when veterinarian Dr. Bruce Herwald acquired the facility.
By 2013, staff and management started to develop exciting long-term goals that widened Shady Spring’s range of activities and services. We wanted to promote healthier activities, more convenient services and a cozier retreat for pets.

By spring 2014, the roots of this long-term goal began to take hold. Along with new activities and services, we felt a new name would better reflect our vision. And so, in 2014, Shady Spring Boarding Kennel and Camp for Dogs officially became Shady Spring Pet Retreat.
Over the past 70 years, we’ve continued to evolve and modernize our facilities and services. But one thing has remained constant through the decades: our unwavering dedication to caring for our animal guests.
